NOT: Patee Thai, 371-373 Brunswick St, Fitzroy

I’ll be blunt. Other than the novelty of eating your meal while simultaneously stretching your hip flexors on floor cushions, I can’t think of much else to commend about Patee Thai. The restaurant was decked out in every Thai cliché I could think of (lots of temple references) and the food was bland, anglo-fied Thai food. Our curries looked and tasted like they’d been assembled using the following instructions: beef red curry = beef + ladle of sauce from red vat, chicken green curry = chicken + ladle of sauce from green vat.  It was telling that not a single patron was Thai.

My advice? If you want good cheap Thai food, head to Thaila Thai or Mamanee Thai.

  1. Mammanee on Smith St, Collingwood is almost as good as Thaila Thai
