So I went into Richmond Hill Cafe & Larder for a pre-hairdressing appointment snack and accidentally found myself indulging in a berry and ricotta sponge cake ($9.50). I can’t explain why I sometimes go into these sugar-eating trances, where all I want to do is eat cake morning, noon and night. This gorgeously girly cake consisted of a relatively dense almond or hazelnut meal sponge, layered with a smear of jam and whipped ricotta then lightly dusted with icing sugar. The homage to the Victoria sponge was saved from cloying cuteness by the drizzle of cinnamon-infused cream and the bright berries. Hmmm….sugar and spice and all things nice.
