HOT: Nam Loong, 223 Russell St, Melbourne

The best steamed buns in town (even better than Shark Fin House) come from Nam Loong. The location is not the most salubrious (next to Club X) and I wouldn’t choose to sit down for a meal in their dank greasy-spoon dining room, but as long you don’t venture past the glass case of steamed buns on offer you’ll be fine.

The service is so brusque that I’ve never had the chance to photograph the steam rising as your choices are lifted out from the giant bamboo steamers. So you’ll just have to trust me that the soft fluffy buns are fresh, piping hot and useful hand-warmers for cold winter days. I recommend the pork buns (not to sweet or runny) followed by an egg custard bun for dessert.
