Melbourne Tours on Trike, 6/198 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands

Melbourne Tours on Trike has been running tours of Melbourne and surrounds on their custom-built motorcycle tricycles for almost 9 years, and today was the first time I got to ride on one, thanks to an invitation from Destination Docklands.

Melbourne Tours on Trike  trips are a combination of sightseeing, commentary and what the owner Alan called ‘whoosh’ – the thrill you get from riding three-wheeled motorcycles at 80km/hr.

Each bike seats two people and all safety gear is provided, including motorcycle helmets, weather protective jackets and gloves. The trikes are turned over every 5 years so the equipment is kept in good condition.

While the tours visit tourist sites the aim is to show visitors and locals a part of Melbourne that they may not have necessarily seen or are not as easy to get to. For a 1 hour tour I had a choice of two itineraries starting and ending in Docklands – over the Westgate Bridge to Williamstown or down to Albert Park and the Grand Prix track.

It’s not every day that I get to ride the Westgate freeway on a motorbike so I opted for the Williamstown tour. We quickly got our helmets on, connected up the microphones so we could talk to each other and held on tight!

Our journey took us up over the Westgate, down through Spotswood, Newport and Williamstown to Point Gellibrand (the richest heritage site in the history of Victoria), then up to Bolte Bridge, to Ron Barassi Snr Park before ending at Harbour Esplanade.

Enroute we appreciated the magnificent vistas of the bay and city skyline, the historical buildings of Williamstown including this converted dairy that featured on Grand Designs Live and learnt a bit about the history of Melbourne’s west thanks to our friendly guide.

The highlight was experiencing the freedom of being on a motorbike (while someone else drove) and seeing these familiar scenes with a whole new perspective with the fresh air and the open road. Sometimes being a tourist in my own city is the best fun!

Melbourne Tours on Trike is a fun and exciting way to explore Melbourne, whether you’re a visitor or a local. A tour makes a great birthday or Christmas gift (the oldest person they’ve taken on board was 100 years old!) and the trikes are even available for hire for special occasions such as weddings.

As an added incentive Melbourne Tours on Trike are currently offering an early bird discount until 29 February 2016 for all tour bookings starting from 1 May 2016.
