HOT: Land of Madness, Forum Theatre, 154 Flinders Street, Melbourne

MIFF #4: The filmmaker Luc Moullet hails from the Southern Alps of France and he has noticed a bizarre habit in the inhabitants of the region. Land of Madness is his quirky investigation as to why a ‘pentagon of insanity’ exists in this remote area of France and Moullet delivers his narration with deadpan drollness as he describes a litany of murders, suicides and immolations committed by his compatriots.

The repetition of horrors became a bit tedious after a while and there were a slow trickle of people exiting the cinema after the first half. I stayed till the end because I wanted to see how he would finish it – and the set-up debate was one of the better moments of the film.
