HOT: Builders Arms Hotel, 211 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

There was a time when the Builders Arms meant only one thing for me – a place where you were guaranteed cheesy 80s hits and that special coloured lights tiled dance floor (a la Saturday Night Fever) where you could strut your lawnmower dance.

Well, since my youth the Builders Arms has gone upmarket – I mean, it has a proper dining room these days instead of  sticky carpet. A very adult-looking dining room with crazy flocked wallpaper and siren-red velvet booths which was unfortunately too dark for me to photograph properly.

OK, so our beef and mushroom pie and chickpea salad were not the best meals we’d ever had – as RM said, it wasn’t flash but it did the job. Best of all, on Monday night all mains under $22 are half price. So for the two of us, too tired/lazy to cook after a worknight, dinner cost $20 – so you can’t really complain.

  1. Wow, sounds good.
We in the UK have many hotels and buildings that went up in prices and quality.
Sounds very interesting, gonna check more HOT’s ;-)

  2. If you are in Melbourne, the Builders Arms Hotel in Fitzroy is a recommended venue. True, I am a Melbourne expat and know this hotel very well. They serve the coldest beer and make the best Sunday Roast one can expect.
