HOT: Beatbox Kitchen, around Melbourne

Beatbox Kitchen Melbourne Hot or Not review

Mobile food vans are nothing new. But a mobile food van that looks like a big stereo is pretty cool.

Raph owns the Beatbox Kitchen and serves up burgers and fries in locations trackable only via Twitter. He pulled up in front of the Lamington Drive gallery opening  of Risographica! on a wet evening and I was his first customer.

There are only three items on the menu – Raph beef burger with salad and tangy mango ($11), a portabello mushroom burger with the same salad and tangy mayo ($11)  and hand cut chips with tangy mayo or Annie’s tomato relish ($5).

The burgers are pretty good – grilled to order with crisp salad ingredients, although personally I think not as good as gourmet burger chain Grill’d. I highly recommend ordering the relish with your cone of fries – Annie is a family friend of Raph’s and she makes huge jars of the relish in Seaford only for her family and Beatbox Kitchen.

  1. Yum, really craving a burger today for no apparent reason. Quickly clicked through to Twitter but they haven’t put up any current coordinates boo – oh well, all good things require waiting!

  2. Joyce, Tis a shame he didn’t have his Eddy Current ice-cream sandwich. That was a winner at Meredith Music Festival last year.

  5. I’ve also seen them sell chicken schnitzel wraps (really good) and even breakfast piadina’s at Golden Plains.

Also not as good as grill’d? Taste the actual meat grill’d put in their burgers, it’s disgusting unless it’s ‘drowned out’ on your palate by the sauces. Tastes like cardboard…

    • Hi Baggins

Oh cool – I’ll have to lobby for them to return the chicken schnitzel wraps and breakfast piadinas. As for the comparisons with Grill’d, I’m going to pass the buck and say that RM was the one who told me that Grill’d was better, and he has one of their burgers quite often so I guess he’d know…

  6. This guy could have crowds around his wagon if he could eventually afford to make his controls semi-usable, for instance, real speakers, tuning dial and big equalizer bars customers can play with as they wait. A playfully seductive interface combined with reputable burger quality could really make a living for one guy.

  10. Great idea for the van, one of the best I have seen for food delivery of any type. Take that for a spin over 50mph and you take fast food to a whole new level.

  12. Very good idea Raph. I’m sure you’ll get far with your business. Just keep up the quality of your product and everything will be okay.

    • I totaly agree with the comment above. The downfall of many restaurants it’s that they don’t think very far ahead. They get greedy and try to save money by cutting on the quality and quantity of the food they serve. If you put an extra buck into your burger, rest asure people will buy that even if the price is a bit higher.

People are always in search for good food!

      My five cents
      Cheers!
