One of my discoveries for Melbourne Music Week is actually not directly about music. If you visit any of the bars at Melbourne Music Week you’ll find Lupe, an innnovative single serve filled wine glass that’s perfect for festivals and events. Today’s HOT Chat is with Georgia Beattie, the founder of Lupe (you’ll have to excuse the lack of accent on the ‘e’ of Lupe, can’t work it out on my keyboard!). Thanks Georgia!

Georgia, tell me a bit more about your background and the story behind Lupe?

I’ve grown up amongst all things wine. My father started making wine when I was young and of course he had us out in the vineyard picking grapes and getting amongst the very hands on process of making wine. I have worked with my father at his company Swords Select for the last 5 or so years which gave me a feel for the wine industry and running a business.

What inspired you to develop Lupe?

I was at a festival in Melbourne and I asked the bar staff whether I could have a glass of wine instead of the typical lolly water or beer that they usually serve.

It turned out that the packaging was the major limitation. Spirits and beer seem to have managed to create a user friendly package, I pondered why hadn’t wine?

So given my wine background and entrepreneurial drive I started prototyping my own single serve glass of wine. I came across some fairly major hurdles in the PET glass creation just about the same time I learnt of James Nash in the UK who had been working on a ready to drink wine product for the last 5 years.

I jumped on a plane with all that was remaining in my bank account shortly after finishing university and now I have the rights to Mr Nash’s product in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Having Mr Nash’s product opposed to my own creation gave me a much faster route to market as well as the confidence with a proven and tested product that was successfully selling in the UK and Europe.

What’s a typical work day for you and what advice would you give to someone starting their own business?

I usually go for a jog around the tan at 5.30 / 6am to prepare myself for the day (healthy body healthy mind). I have a coffee on my way to work (location depending on my mood – I don’t have a regular I’ll rotate between St Edmonds, Auction Rooms, Dukes Coffee, Cumulus Inc). Over a coffee I plan my day and to do list.

If I could predict the rest of my day it would make my life a lot easier, unfortunately I roll with the punches and try to cross as much as I can off my to do list.

What are your next plans for Lupe?

Lupe is essentially a packaging company so I’d like to walk down the liquor isle within 5 years and see all my favorite branded wines with a single serve version along side the 750ml bottle. We’re creating an entirely new market segment with the single serve that is complementary to the 750ml bottle. It’s going be extremely challenging but exciting at the same time. We’re currently in discussions with 2 large wine companies about packaging a single serve.

We recently launched in Japan and we’ll slowly roll out into Korea and Hong Kong next year.

Something very curious has landed in the courtyard of the Malthouse Theatre.

What is it? It looks like a big wooden box. No obvious doors or windows but if you listen carefully you can hear the faint scraping of string instruments.

It’s the Quartetthaus! The Australian National Academy of Music and lighting and design studio bluebottle have built a temporary space for the performance of string quartets during the Melbourne Festival. The venue only seats 52 people who sit in two rows encircling the round stage at which the four musicians play.

From the outside, no clues are given as to what lies within. The door opens mysteriously and you’re ushered in two by two between a row of coat hooks (very practical idea for an intimate space) and an inky black curtain adding to the air of anticipation. The bare wood of the outside of the Quartetthaus has been varnished on the inside to enhance the grain, bringing a warm hue to the interior very much like that of a violin.

At last the curtain is drawn back and we take our places. The lighting is subtle, turning the small room into a contemporary take on an 18th century candelit salon. The audience is hushed. No talking, no coughing, no fidgeting – the space is too small for that.

Each night there are three performances featuring musicians of the Academy. The night of my visit two of the works were unfamiliar to me – String Quartet No 1 Metamorphoses nocturnes by Gyorgy Ligeti (1953) and String Quartet No 3 (2007) by Richard Mills (2007). They were powerful works, at times discordant, at times melodic. Being more of a classical music traditionalist, my favourite was the Schubert String Quartet Number 12 in C minor (1820).

At such close quarters you can hear the musicians breathe, see their brows furrow with concentration, admire the precision of their fingerwork and catch the tiny snippets of eye contact they make with the other members of the quartet. The stage rotates at an imperceptible rates, so you’re never stuck behind someone’s back. I watched the musicians sway on their stools and be transported by the music.

The Quartetthaus makes the string quartet experience visceral and incredibly powerful – even if you’re not a classical music fan I think you’ll like it. Tickets are free and while it is booked out there is a waiting list as inevitably people drop out. You can book at ANAM (03) 9645 7911 http://www.anam.com.au/qhaus. Don’t miss it!

For those of you lucky enough not to work on a Friday, did you know you can give yourself a dose of classical music with your art every few months at NGV International?

Orchestra Victoria, the orchestra which accompanies Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet is presenting a series of free lunchtime concerts every few months in conjunction with NGV’s current Winter Masterpieces exhibition Vienna Art and Design. The orchestra is presenting a series of classical Viennese works in the glorious Great Hall under the stunning stained glass ceiling by Leonard French.

I attended a concert with a delightful Strauss, Mahler and Beethoven program and I’m already looking forward to the next concert on Friday 14 October, which will feature young Shanghai-born cellist Li Wei Qin.

The tickets are free and are highly sought after so must be booked ahead – just call Orchestra Victoria on 03 9694 3669.

The 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival kicked off at the glamorous Palais Theatre with an opening night of jazz standards reinterpreted by a group of not-your-usual jazz vocalists – Tex Perkins, Paris Wells, Eddie Perfect and Kimbra.

The four singers rotated two or three songs over two acts, accompanied by the impressively tight Sam Keevers Trio (Sam Keevers (piano), Brett Hirst (bass) and Simon Barker (drums)). Tex Perkins was his usual louche self and growled his way through an unexpected Burt Bacharach number (not sure when Burt became part of the jazz canon but happy to go along with it). Eddie Perfect upped the beat of Lullaby of Birdland, bopping and weaving through some highly syncopated rhythms.

After the show my friends and I agreed that the female vocalists were much stronger. When I saw and heard Paris Wells the words ‘a sassy broad and a dame’ came to mind – in a sexy slinky dress she bantered with the audience and her warm, gutsy soul voice was reminiscent of an on-the-mark Amy Winehouse. Finally, the performance which was really a revelation and still sticks in my mind was by Kimbra, a New Zealand musician based in Melbourne. She looked slight and delicate in her strapless froth of a ballgown, but captured my imagination with her chameleon vocals, moving from sweet to soaring, smoky to brilliant (amazingly, apparently she’s never been taught to sing). Her version of ‘Catch a Falling Star’, using a taped loop of her vocals to build a childlike, nursery-rhyme rhythm and texture, is still with me. I think the audience agreed with me, as they gave her long enthusiastic applause after each of her numbers.

The 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival is happening until 13 June, with something for everyone, from free concerts to kids’ activities.

J: “I’m going to a movie this Saturday. I don’t know what the movie is or where it’s screening, but do you want to come with me?”

K: “Umm…ok. I don’t really get it but it sounds intriguing…”

Intrigue is the key to the success of Underground Cinema. The premise is this – you buy a movie ticket ($35). At the time of booking all you’re told is the theme of the movie – you don’t know the name of the film. The location of the screening is also undisclosed (but generally inner-city Melbourne). You plan your dress-up outfit and a few days before the show you’re told where to meet. Turn up, enjoy the entertainment – and all is revealed when the opening credits start.

So why would you want to buy a ticket for an unknown film? Because Underground Cinema is not just about the movie, it’s about the overall experience. The sold-out screening that I attended had a 1920s/gangster theme and from 4:30pm Chapel Street was lined with red-lipped flappers in slinky dresses and feather boas, escorted by dapper men in tuxedos and trench coats. We entered the glamorous Red Bennies to the sounds of The Cairo Club Orchestra bopping out jazz tunes and big band numbers and admired the frantic swing dancers from Swing Patrol.

Now whenever there’s a dress-up party I’m normally the party-pooper who doesn’t turn up in costume. But in this case I did make a little effort and I’m glad that I did – because 99% of the crowd did get dressed up and it really added to the decadent Great Gatsby-esque atmosphere of the event. I really felt like I’d been transported back into the Jazz Age, minus the cigarette fog. Some people who paid more sat in booths and were served sparking by Moulin Rouge waitresses in feather head-dresses. I loved people-watching for the hour or so before the movie started and the fun foot-tapping music was right up my alley (though no Charleston for this pregnant lady).

And the movie? It was 1931 film Little Caesar starring Edward G. Robinson and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. As you’d expect from an old black and white Hollywood film (even one nominated as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress) the acting was a bit forced and the gangster accents were almost unintelligible. I think most of the crowd gave up watching the film and just drank and chatted, occasionally popping a party popper or blowing a straw whistle. So be warned if you’re a diehard cinephile – if you go to Underground Cinema you’ll find it difficult to concentrate on the film and will spend a lot of time trying to shush people.

The Prohibition Speakeasy party was the last screening for 2010 but with the regular sell-out success of Underground Cinema I suggest you get on the mailing list to receive information about the 2011 screenings. It’s a really fun experience that is very far removed from your average sterile cinemaplex.

For more fabulous photos from the event, check our their Flickr set.

Finally we’re experiencing some warmer weather in Melbourne – and have you noticed the increased number of cyclists these days?

It all bodes well for the upcoming Melbourne Bikefest, a 5 day festival being held at 1000 £ Bend which will celebrate all things cycling related in our city. Today’s HOT Chat is with Pip Carroll, the director of Melbourne Bikefest. Thanks Pip!

Pip, tell me a bit more about your background and what inspired you to start Melbourne Bikefest?

My background is pretty varied, I’ve been running a business called Ambiguous Horse since 2006 that specialises in management, marketing and producing for the arts and cultural industries. So I’m always working on something different. Ambiguous Horse, supported by a volunteer committee produced the Melbourne Bicycle Film Festival from 2007 to 2009.

Earlier this year we decided to branch out from the BFF and create a new event designed especially for Melbourne – and Melbourne Bikefest was born!

We wanted to celebrate and support an emerging bike culture in Melbourne, one that is less focused on sport and recreation and more interested in bikes as a means of daily transport, integrated into other parts of life. The more people that choose a bike over a car, the better the road conditions will be for everyone, including motorists. For people to choose to ride however they need to identify as bike riders, and through Bikefest we hope to create something more people can see themselves being a part of.

What is Melbourne Bikefest all about? What can visitors expect to see or experience?

Melbourne Bikefest is about celebrating bikes in everyday life. This doesn’t mean that you need to ride one everyday to enjoy it though! In fact there are only one or two events in the entire program that actually requite you to be on a bike. Most of the program is devoted to other cultural activities – art, design, music, fashion, shopping, forums, workshops, and advocacy projects. Bikefest really is more of a cultural festival about bikes than a ‘cycling’ event.

The majority of our activities are held right in the middle of the city at 1000 £ Bend. We will offer Bicycle Valet Parking for anyone that rides, but it’s a very easy place to get to via public transport. Over 5 days the space will host events and activities from morning to night, all against a backdrop of art and interactive installations. Plus a bar!

At the end of the day it’s really just about having a good time and giving people a glimpse of life on two wheels.

What is your one must-do recommendation for Melbourne Bikefest?

I’m always reluctant to choose just one thing! We’ve programmed Melbourne Bikefest so that you have the opportunity to experience several different activities all in the one visit. However I would say that the Bikefest Great Debate will be a night to remember, we’ve got together some amazing local comedians to put a light hearted spin on the argument that ‘Bikes are the best form of transport’. It features Charlie Pickering, Hannah Gadsby, Bart Freebairn, Lawrence Leung, Harley Breen, Andrew McClelland and is moderated by Josh Earl.

My other recommendation, for those that like to dress up (and who doesn’t?) would be the Melbourne Tweed Ride. Leaving from the State Library steps, it’s a slow cruise in salute to times gone by. Hopefully it will help redress some of the crimes against Lycra we see all too frequently on the streets of Melbourne.

Why do you like cycling, and particularly in Melbourne?

Wow I like riding a bike for so many reasons, where do I start? First up would have to be sense of freedom I get riding. If I have a frustrating day, chained to the desk, feeling like I’m not getting anywhere, stuck in the treadmill of life, riding home just unravels all of that immobility and delivers a palpable sense of achievement.

I’m also one of those people that has subconscious punctuality sabotage syndrome – I think I can get anywhere in 20 minutes. Thankfully on a bike in Melbourne it’s mostly true.

And do I need to mention the great things it does for your butt?

Finally, what are your HOT tips for Melbourne where you like take your bike?

I like going to the Penny Farthing Espresso (206 High St, Northcote +61 3 9482 2246). It’s just up the road from my house and has a welcoming and relaxed vibe. The coffee is good, the food uncomplicated and satisfying and they always seem to be exceptionally well staffed with polite and good-looking Gen Y employees. What more could you ask for?

Down the road is The Movie Reel (69 High Street, Westgarth +61 3 9486 8866). It’s a great old school DVD hire place that’s good for a bit of eavesdropping on a Friday night. They have an amazing range. I reviewed some bike movies last year and they had every title I asked for. Plus they don’t mind if you tell them the fine belongs to your ‘housemate’.

I’m partial to popping down to the Ceres Organic Market & Shop (Cnr Roberts and Stewart Streets, Brunswick East +61 3 9389 0100) on a Saturday morning. It’s a lovely ride down along the Merri Creek and it’s great to see the chickens that have laid the eggs you’re about to eat. There’s also something very satisfying about whipping your credit card out in the open air.

Also nearby is Fowlers Flowers (488 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill +61 3 9489 9114). It’s next door to another favourite café, Mixed Business (486 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill +61 3 9486 1606). Their arrangements are simple and beautiful and inspire me to clean the house so the flowers have a more fitting backdrop.

Melbourne Bikefestt is being held from Wednesday 24 November to Sunday 28 November. CycleStyle is one of the sponsors – if you see me at any of the events or speaking on a forum, please come say hi!

Help me Doctor!: Dear Dr, I’m hoping to make a favourable impression on a very cultured girl who enjoys classical music. Have you got any good suggestions on where I can take her in Melbourne? – Michael

Your prescription: Hi Michael, it’s great to hear that you’re doing your research in your quest to impress a girl! My suggestions for where you could take a classical musical fan are:

A concert by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra http://www.mso.com.au/cpa/htm/htm_home.asp
A concert at Melbourne’s traditional concert hall Melbourne Recital Centre https://www.melbournerecital.com.au/
Recitals which tend to feature young artists at Australian National Academy of Music http://www.anam.com.au/
My personal favourite, Classic Jam, which takes classical music out of the concert hall http://classicjam.org/

There are other options involving opera, both live and in HD cinema such as those of the Metropolitan Opera and the Palace Opera & Ballet series.

Good luck! Joyce

The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is an annual event showcasing international jazz musicians in Melbourne and it’s starting in a week’s time, from 1 to 8 May. During the week Melbourne’s streets, concert halls, clubs, bars and galleries will host to world’s leading modern masters of jazz, including Charles Lloyd, Ahmad Jamal, Mulatu Estatke and Peter Brotzmann.

Michael Tortoni (Artistic Director) and Sophia Brous (Program Director) have put together a rich multi-layered program of events – of course there will be music, but there will also be film, visual art, public art installations and forums. As you can imagine it’s an extremely busy time of year for the festival so big thanks to Sophia Brous for taking time out for today’s HOT Chat.

Sophia, tell me a bit more about your background and how you came to be the Program Director of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival?

I have been playing music and singing since I was very young… I studied jazz at the VCA and also at a conservatory in the USA and all along the way I was getting involved in radio and curating different music series and one-off shows. I moved back to Melbourne a few years a go after a few years of frat parties in Boston and immersed myself in the local music scene, going to shows every night and playing. Around that time I was offered the opportunity to work at the Festival, it’s been tutti frutti ride ever since…

Jazz is often considered an ‘old people’ genre of music. So how did you become interested in jazz and do you think your young age (24!) brings anything different to the festival program?

When I was around 12 or 13 I just became obsessed with jazz and listened to a lot of records, mostly bebop and swing and then into more free jazz stuff as I got older. I was also listening to a lot of rock, noise and DIY home recorded pop. I had music teachers that encouraged me a lot to look at jazz repertoire, experiment and improvise. I guess my musical interests have broadened a lot since then but I still have a very firm connection and deep love of jazz.

I tend to think of music as incremental and evolving …I definitely apply this to how I put together the festival. I really hope to express what’s actually going on in Melbourne and around the world in a way that’s inviting for people, if we’re able to even partly articulate that then we’re on the right track…

What’s a typical work day for you?

Wake up, no breakfast, head to the office, work, work, meetings, work (with RRR blaring), dinner with friend or go to a gig, go home and work, collapse into bed. Repeat.

I’m working on inserting a rest on a tropical island somewhere in there…

What do you enjoy most about working in the Melbourne International Jazz Festival?

It’s a great thing to be able to put together so many projects around a city that I love so much, I get real kick out of that…plus the shows at the Festival will be FUN, it’s pretty blissful to sit back after the many months of putting it together and enjoy the show…

What are some of the most interesting or challenging projects that you’ve worked on in your career?

Taking on my role at the festival at 22 certainly ushered me along a learning curve. I was able to apply the knowledge I had built up about the Australian and international music community whilst at the same time working within in a broader context of a large festival with partners across the government, corporate and cultural sectors. I’m not sure I even knew what a sector was before I started at the Festival…now that’s progress!

What are your must-see recommendations from this year’s festival?

Phwoar, now that’s a hard one…I’m excited about A LOT that’s happening this year. If I had to extract some highlights:

Overground, a 6 hour ‘festival within a festival’ being held across several stages in the hidden spaces of Melbourne Town Hall. The day features a huge line-up of creative improvisers including Brian Chase the classically trained drummer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, legendary free jazz improviser Peter Brotzmann, pianist Paul Grabowsky, Oren Ambarchi and a host of Melbourne’s finest including My Disco, Mick Turner, Kim Salmon, Pikelet, Kram from Spiderbait and Snawklor…it’s going to be big!

The legendary and influential Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke performing in Australia for the first time. This band is HOT, and their second album Contra is HOT! The direction of the new album is less ‘try hard afro-pop’ (or whatever it was in their first album), and now has a lot more pop with a hint of the 80′s in it. Favourites are ‘Giving Up The Gun’, ‘Horchata’ and ‘I Think UR a Contra’.

Vampire Weekend has just released the video for ‘Giving Up the Gun’ (which can be seen on their MySpace page) – I’ve been trying to figure out the meaning of this track…the lyrics are very ‘Japanese Shogun’. But after the watching the video (there’s even a samurai in there!), my take on the meaning of this song is that you are own worst enemy, and no matter how good you are, you often lose sight of this and beat yourself up over things. But the force is within you, don’t give up and just go on, go on, go on. Something like that anyway!

The video shows a tennis match, with a variety of different players (including HOT Jake Gyllenhaal, who rips his pants off and gets drunk while playing tennis). There’s even pyrotechnics and milk involved. HOT video for a HOT song. Check it out.

2) Tegan and Sara – 11th & 12th May, Forum Theatre, Melbourne
These two sisters have been recording music since their high school days. I saw them at Koko here in London, HOT gig (although there were a lot of butch-looking girls in flannel shirts there who kept looking at me in a slightly uncomfortable way…). Great hairstyles, catchy tunes and very apt lyrics over the spectrum of relationship issues. Emo? No, not quite. But they did have Hunter from AFI play with them in The Con. Favourite songs: Hell (..when you get up, over it, and over them) and The Con (….a million hours left, i think of you, i think of that). Tegan and Sara lyrics, always gets to me.

I’ve been a fan of the Australian Chamber Orchestra for years and after a hiatus of two years while I lived overseas, it’s great to hear them play again in top form.

From any professional orchestra you’d expect excellent musicality as a baseline. What makes the ACO special in my mind is that they are also a fabulously visual orchestra. All of the musicians stand up (in fact, they used to have a petite violinist who had to stand on a crate) and their passion for the music is expressed not only through their instruments but in the swaying, tilting, dancing and leaping of their bodies. It’s particularly thrilling when the musicians stare engrossed at a single point from their semicircle and the bows snap the notes out in dramatic unison.

For their recent concert at Hamer Hall ‘Tognetti’s Mozart’, the program was a selection of pieces by familiar 18th and 19th century composers. Schubert’s Quartettsatz, D703 was a sweet introduction to the Mozart Violin Concerto No.4, K218 with Artistic Director Richard Tognetti drawing beautiful cantabile tones from his $10 million “Carrodus” violin. After the interval, Grieg’s String Quartet in G minor (arranged by Tognetti) was a vivid and fiery work and sometimes a romp in cheeky knowingness, in contrast to the generally jolly Haydn Symphony No.46.

For me summer in Melbourne heralds long bright evenings, Moonlight Cinema and the Suzuki Night Market at Queen Victoria Market. Evidently I’m not alone as the night market has become a bit of a summer institution for young and old alike and in peak time (between 6-8pm) the crowds swell to almost uncomfortable levels.

Nevertheless, it’s still an experience which is very enjoyable. The huge numbers of milling locals and tourists lend an excited vibrancy to the atmosphere and there’s live music on all night encompassing all sorts of genres and giving the kiddies a chance to bop. As an after work activity nothing beats strolling around having nothing on your mind other than what to eat from the plethora of fragrant food stalls.

After our food reconnaisance, I stalked a table until seats became free (a rarity) while A went to the vegan stall for a curry plate, and then I went to the stall selling food from Trinidad and Tobago, a cuisine with which I’m definitely not familiar. The options were a chickpea dish, Bake and Shark and some form of fried chicken with a spicy sauce (sorry hazy memory). A last minute decision had me choosing the Bake and Shark ($12) and the friendly lady behind the counter assured me that I would love it.

Yes, bake and shark does usually contain deep-fried shark, although I’m not certain how easy it is to source shark in Australia, so it might have been some other firm white fish in this case. The ‘bake’ refers to the sort of bun holding it all together, which is apparently made from roti flour that is fried in certain shapes to make the bread. My bake and shark was accompanied by a slice of pineapple, some salad and spoonfuls of various colourful sauces which I couldn’t distinguish. As far as mass-produced pre-cooked food goes, this was pretty good and I’d easily pick it again.

For dessert, so much choice! I decided to go for the honey puffs as I’m a real sucker for sweet deep fried dough and bought a plate of huge doughnuts drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds. This is definitely a dessert to be shared and good value for $6.

After our meals we wandered around the other non-food stalls. The mix of sellers was truly bizarre, ranging from cheap tat like sunglasses and imported plastic toys to on-the-spot hair extensions, wall vinyls, vintage clothes and the ubiquitous fisherman pants.

I can’t say I’d recommend the Suzuki Night Market for the shopping or even necessarily the quality of the food – but you’ll still love it for the vibe and the chance to soak in the long summer hours with your friends and family.

I think that Melbourne is particularly conducive to exploration by foot but all those dark and smelly alleyways can be a bit daunting for a newbie. Melbourne By Foot takes you by the hand (foot?) to help you discover the history and hidden secrets of the city.

Hi Dave, tell me a little bit about your background and the story behind Melbourne By Foot?

Hi Joyce! I studied business and worked in a variety of industries including hospitality and tourism. Having spent a few good years aimlessly wandering the globe I often found myself telling strangers how great Melbourne is. Inspired by the almost compulsory nature of walking tours in European cities I wanted to share a similar experience with visitors to our city. It’s no secret that the best parts of Melbourne are hidden. When you arrive in any foreign city the best thing you can do is grab a local and get them to show you around.

What can a person expect when they come on a walking tour with Melbourne By Foot?

At Melbourne By Foot we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We want you to walk away (pardon the pun) with a knowledge of how Melbourne was and how Melbourne is. Guests on the tour can expect a healthy dose of early history blended with Marvellous Melbourne’s modern elements including public art, music and sporting culture. It’s a great introduction for first time visitors who will no doubt find places they will want to return to on their visit.

Melburnians however, shouldn’t feel left out. Sure, you know where to get a good coffee and know which rooftop the hipsters are frequenting this summer. But! Do you know anything about our founding fathers Batman & (Robin) Fawkner? Did you know Melbourne was once called Bearbrass?

Why do you think Melbourne is best explored by foot?

Have you tried using the bus or bike lane in Centre Place? By nature, Melbourne’s famed alleyways make for a nice stroll and we like to take you to some places that you can’t access by bike, bus or tram. Walking is also healthy for the heart and the environment – you don’t have to feel so guilty about the carrot cake consumed en route.

What are your next plans for Melbourne By Foot?

Perhaps taking one or two tours out of the city. There is some great history in places like St Kilda and Fitzroy. Visitors will definitely experience more of the ‘real’ Melbourne if they venture out of the bounds of the CBD. Does Frankston By Foot have a nice ring?

What advice would you give to other people who are starting their own business?

Go for it! Do as much research as possible. Look at competitors and see how your product/service differs from theirs. Business Victoria (www.business.vic.gov.au) is a good place to start. There is a wealth of information on starting your own business which includes grants, licenses, workshops, tax etc.

Finally, what are your tips for what’s HOT in Melbourne?

Mountain Goat Brewery (Corner North St & Clarke St Richmond +61 3 9428 1180) In an age of micro brewery madness this Richmond staple stills serve up a healthy splattering of tasty brews. Mountain Goat Brewery open their warehouse/brewery to the public on Wednesday and Friday nights for beer tastings, tours and delicious pizza. Dave and Cam (the brewers) are often testing out one off beer batches on the Goat crowd so you may find yourself tasting the next big thing. Beer can’t get any fresher! Our summer pick is the Indian Pale Ale.

Georgia Fields at Pure Pop Records (221 Barkly St, St Kilda +61 3 9525 5220) Melbourne songstress Georgia Fields has been the darling of the local pop/indie scene for the past few years. Her infectious songs marry mature lyrics with quirky instrument arrangements and draw inspiration from the likes of Angie Hart, Clare Bowditch and Imogen Heap. With an album due for release shortly, you can catch her each Sunday in January at Pure Pop Records in St Kilda (the only licensed record store in the world). She’s onstage in the courtyard at 6pm and this may be one of the last times you will see her in an intimate venue like this!

Federation Square street theatre – Although their shows are quite identical in content, I would challenge anyone not be entertained by the performers who take up a residency each weekend outside the Melbourne Visitors Centre. The main event (their show) is nothing on the street theatre they use to build a crowd. There is lots of crowd interaction and jokes played on unsuspecting passer bys. Be careful not to get caught out yourself! Donations welcome.

Thanks to Melbourne By Foot, I’ve been invited to go for a walk around town with Dave, Batman and Robin. You can read all about my experience next week.

Today we say hi to my new guest blogger CC, a cool ex-Melburnian who now calls East London home. Skinny jeans aficionado, mosh pit veteran, classical pianist now electric guitarist, CC will be bringing you news of upcoming HOT gigs in Melbourne. Her motto is ‘with great musical wisdom, comes great musical responsibility’ and this girl has cred – I’ve followed in her musical wake at New Young Pony Club, The Cribs, Goldfrapp, Does It Offend You Yeah, Interpol, Turin Brakes, Cajun Dance Party, Broken Social Scene, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors – and Lucky Voice Karaoke in Soho.

If you’d like to become a guest-blogger too, just send me an email.

CC’s HOT Gig List – Top 3 HOT gigs for the next 3 months

January 2010

1) Yeah Yeah Yeahs (US) – 3rd Jan, Forum
No one could be HOTTER than Karen O with amazing vocals and crazy outfits! The latest album, ‘It’s Blitz‘, has clever, yet heartfelt lyrics and melodies in the league of Maps, perhaps even better.

2) The Horrors – 27th Jan, Corner Hotel
Moody, yet melodic bass lines and guitar distortions. Primary Colours – one of the HOTTEST albums released this year. Swoon to Scarlet Fields.

3) Passion Pit – 25th Jan, Corner Hotel (supporting act – Love of Diagrams)
Uplifting, bubblegummy, fun, electro band from US. It was mentioned somewhere that the songs were originally written as a present for the girlfriend. ‘Sleepyhead’ was on my MySpace for quite some time. Great supporting act from Melbourne.

Also check out:

Andrew Bird – 1 Jan, The Hifi
Grizzly Bear – 4 Jan, Corner Hotel
Calvin Harris – 25th Jan, Prince Bandroom
Peaches - 27 Jan, The Hifi

February 2010

1) The xx - 3rd Feb, Corner Hotel
The xx are four young teenagers from south west London, who released their HOT debut album this year, and have now had sold out shows all over London. The album is sad, yet uplifting and inspiring at the same time.

2) The Cribs – 17th Feb, Billboard Nightclub
Awesome band (which Jetsetting Joyce and I saw twice in London!). The 3 Jarman brothers now have a new addition, guitartist Johnny Marr (of The Smiths and Modest Mouse). Watch out for the crazy antics of Ryan Jarman.

3) Florence and the Machine – 3rd Feb, Palace Theatre
Listed as “one of the breakthrough acts in the UK for 2009″. Fronted by 23 year old Florence Welch, who has been compared to the likes of Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and even Fergie (the Duchess, not the one from Black Eyed Peas). She used to sing at funerals too. Expect angry lyrics and maybe some harp playing.

Also check out:

The Pains of Being Pure at heart – 17 and 18 Feb, East Brunswick Club

March 2010

1) The Big Pink – 5th Mar, Billboard Nightclub
Definitely HOT gig pick for March. An excellent debut album was released in 2009, “A Brief History of Love”, for this electro rock band.

2) Lady GaGa – 23rd and 24th Mar, Rod Laver Arena
Now, this lady, she’s HOT! Check out her new tattoos and new video clip for Bad Romance. I’ve been learning those dance moves, and someone please dare me to get inked with the cursive text of some random philosophical quote on my arm.

3) La Roux – 19th Mar, Festival Hall
Weird hair, weird look but catchy songs!

Candy Bowers wanted all the critics to introduce their reviews by saying that Who’s That Chik? features ‘a girl in skin tight dance pants’. So if you’re expecting crisp white linen suits and the perfect diction of God of Carnage, you’re in the wrong theatre.

Candy B’s self-written, autobiographical show is billed as ’a hip hop tale of a brown girl with big dreams’. I’m not much of a hip hop-er (RM recently had to explain Snoop talk to me….off the hizzle, for shizzle) so I didn’t really know whether I’d like the show or not. Which just proves why we should always try something new, for this brash show is high-energy, high-colour fun and Candy is an outspoken and bold talent.

The show starts with a humourous video of Candy giving some lip to Cate Blanchett, who has dared to ask Candy to collaborate with her. Candy says no – her solo show is going to blow the Sydney Theatre Company out of the water.

While the rest of the show involves audience call-and-response, booty shaking and a hilarious impression of Lionel Ritchie, the singing, dancing and hip hop beats are all a vehicle for Blasian (black-Asian-Caucasian) Candy to reflect on the melange of cultures in her family and express her political beliefs about the ‘whiteness’ of Australian performing arts. We all know that the Asian chick on Neighbours represents token diversity and any moment she’s going to get wacked from the storyline. When will a Sudanese family move into Ramsay Street? Why doesn’t prime time TV reflect the cultural diversity you see in Footscray, Maribynong and Campbelltown?

For me, the story that struck home the most was her describing her childhood growing up in suburban Dandenong, keenly aware of being different. Her memories and even her photographs reflected my childhood experiences – of being the standout Asian kid in ballet group photos, with dead straight black hair that would never fall into ringlets and passing as a German maid, Captain Logan’s English wife and a bushranger on stage.

Whether you agree or disagree with her politics, the show is uplifting and inspiring and happy. This is mostly due to the Candy’s humour and exuberance and the obvious passion with which she’s written and performed her story. It’s no mean feat that she’s able to hold the audience’s attention on her own for 90 minutes. And at the end of it, everyone – black, white, yellow, old and young – gets up to dance! It’s a joyful moment.

Thanks to the Arts Centre for inviting me to the show.

On the way home RM and I had a discussion about where Jamie T, the hot new indie rock singer/songwriter from the UK, might come from. Sharing the same intelligence and rakish charm as the Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and with his ‘orright guvnor’ geezer accent, we guessed the north. Maybe Leeds or Manchester? Or at a pinch, east London.

Nope. According to Wikipedia, Jamie T is from the upper class leafy London suburb of Wimbledon. Which makes his snappy, street-smart lyrics of gritty urban narratives seems slightly incongruous in hindsight. But ne’er mind. Jamie T, with his backing band The Pacemakers, is one talented 23 year old with an enormously energetic stage presence. He’s the kind of relaxed bloke that guys wanna be mates with and his boyish skinny frame and ruffled hair is the cute kind of look that girls wanna snog. He sang with fun and passion and looked out into the audience like he was loving every minute.

The sold out crowd definitely loved every minute, as they enthusiastically shouted the lyrics of every song, arms raised and pounding out the beat. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a gig that had a proper moshpit and the sweatbox The Hifi is the perfect place for it. It’s my favourite live music venue in Melbourne because the split level sunken floor means that you can stand on the edge of the moshpit, be able to see the stage, but not actually get caught up in the swirling mass of drunken, sweaty bodies or crowd-surfing mania. Climbing out into the cool night air of Swanston Street with my ears ringing and my clothes sticking to my skin, I felt elated. It was like I’d briefly regained my yoof and had become part of the music scene for the Skins generation.

So you’re at the chemist with a dry sore throat – do you reach for the Strepsils, Butter-menthols or Soothers?

Well, I’m guessing that the purpose of the Soothers Pop-Up Concerts is that when it comes to that critical decision, your mind will still be on the great gig you attended and your subconscious will guide your hand straight to the Soothers. Otherwise I think it’s quite an unexpected collaboration – other than the fact that singers often suffer from sore throats, I’m not sure what other synergies there are between live music, throat lozenges and Nova radio’s youthful target market. Especially as I think they missed a key marketing opportunity by not giving out free samples – instead, they charged you 50c for a packet. That means that for approximately $150 in the marketing budget they could have had people dressed up Soothers t-shirts handing out free samples to the 300 or so gig goers who had nothing to do between sets but mill around, chat and see Soothers paraphernalia everywhere. I don’t have a MBA but I am really confused by Soothers‘ marketing plan. And frankly, their ridiculous 50c charge for a product they’re trying to promote (in an otherwise expensive and elaborate manner) have actually put me off buying Soothers next time.

Anyway, back to the music. Soothers Pop-Up Concerts are a series of one-off gigs around Australia and the only way to get tickets is to enter a draw with Nova. The first of the Melbourne concerts was in the atmospherically gothic Abbotsford Convent featuring Sarah Blasko and a support act whose name I didn’t catch (Whitey? Wiley?).

Whitey/Wiley/Whatever was a young singer/songwriter who should really focus on the music and keep his banter to a minimum. His guitar-based folky-rock music was pretty good – intelligent and reasonably melodic. But my over-riding impression from his set was his irritating interspersal of juvenile breakfast-radio humour, from telling the audience to shut up, dissing Kisschasey, strumming Nirvana chords randomly and telling a long-winded stupid anecdote about a dead rabbit. His PR management also needs to tell him to repeat his name more frequently and more clearly. I can’t find him anywhere on the internet.

Sarah Blasko, on the other hand, was clearly a consummate professional. The marionette-like movements of her graceful frame (dressed appropriately in a dress inspired by a nun’s habit) and her expressively delicate face were entrancing to watch and her sometimes dark, sometimes soothing, sometimes raw music literally transported me for the hour. I didn’t feel time passing at all as my body rocked and swayed to the emotional pull of the music from this superbly talented performer. She was also charming and gracious with the audience without pretending to be best mates with them. As my friend said “I think I love Sarah Blasko“.

My love note to my home town this week is this stencil art that made me giggle. Have a great week!

I think I’m a bit in denial about reaching my third decade. I can yank out those white hairs, dab eye cream religiously and hit the gym for Body Pump workouts. But whereas I used to have an almost weekly gig habit, even on school nights, I have to acknowledge that I find it very hard to maintain the momentum to do 11:20pm gigs these days. My nightlife mostly now consists of watching a movie or reading a book and heading to bed at 10:30pm for my beauty sleep.

Triple J described I Heart Hiroshima as the best band to come out of Brisbane since the Go-Betweens. For their gig at the intimate East Brunswick Club, the three piece (two guitarists and a drummer) played songs from their first and upcoming albums. Their music was good fun – a kind of spiky, humorous, shouty, catchy drum-driven indie rock, but it wasn’t exactly ground-breaking or innovative stuff. To be honest they sounded like a spawn of the UK guitar sound produced by many other Norfern bands I heard in London.

Nevertheless, being there, feeling the drum beats ricocheting in my chest, reminded me about why I enjoyed going to see live music. So, I’m going to aim to go to a gig a month before I really turn into a white-haired, wrinkled and housebound housewife.
