The Environmental Film Festival Melbourne is back again this year with more environmental themed films screening from 11-16 October at Kino Cinemas, 45 Collins St, Melbourne.

The aim of the festival is to increase awareness of key environmental issues by bringing together film-makers, experts, policy makers, politicians and the wider community in an open conversation about the world we live in. Click here to read an interview from last year with the director of the festival, Nicholas Aberle.

Thanks to the Environmental Film Festival Melbourne I have a double pass to give away to two films – Into Eternity and City Light.

Into Eternity is screening on Friday 14 October 8:30pm. Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storages, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes. In Finland the world’s first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock – a huge system of underground tunnels – that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous. Once the waste has been deposited and the repository is full, the facility is to be sealed off and never opened again. Or so we hope, but can we ensure that?

City Dark has its Australian Premiere on Saturday, 15 October 9:00pm. This is a feature documentary about light pollution and the disappearing night sky. After moving to New York City from rural Maine, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks a simple question, “Do we need the stars?”. Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawaii, tracking hatching turtles along the Florida coast, and rescuing injured birds on Chicago streets, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, philosophers, historians and lighting designers, “The City Dark” is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars.

If you’d like to win the tickets, just leave a comment below letting me know which film you’d like to see. The winners will be drawn randomly on Monday 10 October. Good luck!

You can buy tickets for these movies and other sessions here. Tickets are $18 adults $14 concession and multi-passes are available here.

A few days ago I went to see the new Mike Mills new comedy/drama Beginners on the strength of several recommendations from friends. I loved it! Funny, quirky, sweet and honest. I think the official film website describes the plotline the best:

Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent) only months after his father Hal Fields (Christopher Plummer) has passed away.

This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life – which included a younger boyfriend, Andy (Goran Visnjic). The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

I have several 2 for 1 ticket passes for the season. You can use the passes Mondays to Fridays at participating cinemas. Here’s the trailer to whet your appetite.

It’s Friday! So why not time for a giveaway?

Chapman Hill is a Victorian family-run olive grove just outside of Melbourne and I first tasted their olive oils at my local providores, Key Ingredients in Clifton Hill. Then I started seeing them pop up in other places I visited – such as Coin Laundry and Philippa’s Breads.

Chapman Hill produce extra virgin olive oil from three different olive tree varieties – Tuscan Frantoio and Lecciono and a West Australian evolved variety called New Norcia. Each of the varietals has different qualities, from grassy to peppery to nutty (my favourite is the nutty New Norcia).

If you’ve never tried them, here’s your chance. I have THREE prize packs of Chapman Hill‘s extra virgin olive oils to give away, comprising a full bottle of each of the New Norcia, Frantoio and Lecciono (RRP $77).

To be in the running all you have to do is leave a comment. Three winners will be drawn randomly and announced next Friday 2 September. Good luck!

Update 2 September: Congratulations to Borris, Samantha and Lee on being the prize draw winners! An email has been sent to you.

One of the nice things that has happened since I started writing this blog more than 2 years ago is that I’ve developed a relationship with some of my regular readers/contributors/other bloggers/Twitter followers. Some of them I’ve never met in person but I know if I did that they would be kindred spirits, the kind of people from the race that knows Joseph (in the words of Anne of Green Gables).

One of these people is Carla Sammut, who writes a blog called Easy as (vegan) pie as well as taking the time to contribute comments on my posts and chatting to me via Twitter. So when Carla contacted me about her new business venture and wanting to provide a giveaway on the blog, of course I said yes. Plus everyone likes a giveaway, right? :–)

So, today’s giveaway is a travel pack of face and body products from Arbonne valued at $64. Arbonne is a botanical skincare and cosmetics brand from Switzerland which is vegan and not tested on animals and RE9 Advanced range is their anti-aging line. The travel pack comes with loads of a products – a Smoothing Facial Cleanser, Regenerating Toner, Intensive Renewal Serum, Corrective Eye Cream, Restorative Day Creme SPF 15, Night Repair Creme, Firming Body Creme and Age-defying Neck Cream, Instant Lift Gel, Nourishing Body Wash, all in a handy travel case.

To win, all you have to do is leave a comment below by 5pm Thursday 12 May. The winner will be drawn randomly and announced on Friday 13 May. Good luck!

Happy Monday! What did you get up to on the weekend?

My weekend was full of weddings. On Sunday it was my one year wedding anniversary and RM and I had our first baby-free evening out, although we still had dinner at the parent-friendly hour of 6:30pm. Thank you Kat’s Cakes for our unexpectedly large one year anniversary cake too!

And in a nice turn of events, on Saturday we attended the wedding of a friend which was held in the same location as our own wedding a year before, the Portico Balcony of Melbourne Town Hall. Melbourne turned out a gorgeous sunny day, the bride and groom looked very happy and the father of the bride teared up. Oh I do love a good wedding :–)

So today’s giveaway is well-timed, as I reflect on my wedding and weddings in general. Portobello Bride is a website and blog that features wedding suppliers who are cool, unique and interesting rather than the frou frou and once a year they hold a boutique wedding market. While I have a fear of bridal expos generally, I know what it’s like to work full time, have a busy social life and still try and fit in wedding planning. The Portobello Bride Boutique Wedding Market contains a curated selection of 30 or so stallholders in one place who will hopefully provide you with some creative inspiration beyond the norm.

For brides (and grooms) to be out there, I have 5 free tickets for the market on Saturday 26 March 10am-5pm which is being held at St Kilda Town Hall (cnr Carlisle St and St Kilda Rd). All you have to do is leave a comment below and the first 5 responses will win. If you miss out you can still purchase tickets for Saturday or Sunday here or at the door. Good luck!

Happy Chinese New Year! At first glance today’s HOT Chat may not seem relevant for celebrating the Year of the Rabbit but traditional customs include getting new clothes, paying off all debts, cleaning the house, feasting with family and friends, giving out red envelopes…and getting new shoes.

This is where new Melbourne-based shoe store CMUK Shoes comes in, because coupled with the HOT Chat with CMUK Shoes founder Steve Chambers is a giveaway for readers to win a pair of shoes! Thanks Steve.

Steve, tell me a bit more about your background and how you came to start CMUK Shoes?

I’m someone who has always enjoyed change – I’ve taught in Aboriginal schools in the Northern Territory, worked with compensation programs for Holocaust survivors throughout Eastern and Central Europe, spent time in Banda Aceh with re-construction projects following the tsunami and most recently worked as barrister in Melbourne.

A couple of years ago I went to a friend’s wedding in South America, was in awe of their beach culture and love of colours and thought it was time for another change! CMUK Shoes is a St Kilda based company that imports its own sneakers focusing on style, comfort, bright colours and cost efficiency.

What makes CMUK Shoes different from other designer sneakers on the market?

I firmly believe that cutting-edge style doesn’t have to come with a lead weight for a price tag, so our sneakers retail for under $50. CMUK Shoes are very lightweight and comfortable, which makes them perfect for a day at the beach, a walk in the park, a stroll down the shops or out for a bite to eat or drink with friends. They also dry very quickly in the sun so customers having been buying them for boating or for non-running activities at the gym as they can also be machine washed on a cold cycle.

You may also have seen in the Herald Sun last weekend that Miss World and her runner up, Miss World Africa, called in to pick up some CMUKs (check out the picture)!

What do you enjoy about the world of retail versus working as a barrister? What advice would you give to people wanting to give up their day jobs to start their own business?

Retail has been a fantastic way to connect with people so as listen to their input, find out what they like and don’t like and what they would like to see next. It is also really enjoyable to go to work knowing you’re going to be running into smiling people most of the day, as opposed to people who come to see you due to often extremely stressful and often unpleasant circumstances occurring in their lives.

My advice to people wanting to start their own business is plan well, get a good mentor, do your homework and then roll the dice. Life is too short to be left wondering!

What has been the most challenging issue you’ve faced starting up CMUK Shoes?

Establishing relationships with suppliers has been a taxing process but when you are putting all the pieces of the puzzle together it is integral to the success of a business such as ours. Luckily I enjoy working with people and negotiation comes with the territory.

What are your next plans for CMUK Shoes?

We are currently having a new website built and pushing hard with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) to focus on our online presence. To not do so would be madness. We are working on new designs, colour ways and researching new materials that comply with the global organic textile standard for our next range, so what you can see now is only step one. Stay tuned.

Finally, what are your HOT tips for where to take your CMUK Shoes around Melbourne?

I spent the majority of my childhood in Brisbane and many of the areas that suffered the worse flooding were places that I grew up in – the local shops, the university, the places where I used to hang out. The areas of devastation are all too familiar.

I am a big fan of chai but there’s good chai (fragrant and warming) and there’s bad chai (watery and burnt).

Having tasted some very bad chai over the years, last year East St Kilda resident Naomi decided to take matters into her own hands and to produce her own chai. Chai mamma is an authentic chai tea made using Fair Trade Certified black tea which is blended with spices and packaged by hand.

Naomi now produces five different sorts of chai : original, spice, family, ginger and green tea, which are all available in 120g (see above) or 1kg loose leaf packets. The chai will soon be available in tea bags.

You can buy the Chai mamma tea by emailing Naomi at sip@chaimamma.com.au and occasionally it’ll pop up in various farmers markets.

Thanks to Naomi I have two x 120g packets of loose leaf chai tea to give away to seven lucky readers (sorry Australian residents only) so you can try it for yourself. All you have to do is leave a comment below before midnight Friday 19 February. I’ll be holding a random draw and will announce the winner on Saturday 20 February on the blog. Good luck!

Happy Friday morning! Here’s a Friday giveaway for you today.

I have a couple of double passes to give away for an exclusive advance film screening of The Boys are Back at 6:45pm on Thursday 29 October at Palace Cinema Como, 299 Toorak Rd, South Yarra.

“Academy Award nominated Scott Hicks (Shine) returns to Australia to direct this poignant drama of fatherhood, starring the talented Clive Owen. It follows Joe, a wise-cracking British sports journalist, living family life in regional South Australia. In the wake of his wife’s tragic death, he finds himself in a sudden state of single parenthood with six-year old Artie. With turbulent emotions swirling, and Joe’s elder teenage son coming to stay, he’s faced with raising two boys in a household devoid of feminine influence and an unabashed lack of rules. United by unspoken love and in search of a road forward, the three multi-generational boys – father and sons alike – must each find their own way to grow up.”
